When people ask us what we do as coaches we usually say that "we help people make more money". That's a good line because it describes what we do in a way that people can understand. But it's not exactly the truth.
Determining and Reaching Goals is Preeminent
Firstly, what we really do is help people determine a true vision of their goals and then help them develop a suitable strategy to get closer to reaching those goals. Money is simply the most often used proxy.
A Wide Breadth of Themes
Secondly, the line doesn't begin to describe the breadth of coaching themes that we address. We've coached many people, particularly lawyers, accountants and consultants, on ways to earn more. And we've coached many others on topics as far ranging as leadership, work life balance, strategic planning, resilience, career development and conflict management. When our skill set doesn't apply we have a broad range of specialist colleagues to turn to.
Keeping Clients Pointed in the Right Direction
There are lots of ways to describe what we actually do as executive coaches. Probably the best is to help our clients clearly understand what their best strategies are and keep them focused on those to the exclusion of the strategies that aren't working. It's like standing behind them, holding their shoulders and pointing them in the right direction.
