Tiger Woods: Conscious or Unconscious Competence

In my last post I made that point that the best marathon runners succeed with Conscious Competence. They pay very close attention to all aspects of their runs. They plan how long each mile will take. They plan how much liquid they will consume. They visualize, rehearse and are focused. If they were Unconsciously Competent they might make a plan and execute it but would depend on ‘letting go’ and ‘getting into the zone’ to for some of their success. I contend the former is better than the later.

Same for Tiger Woods in golf. We’ll see him back soon and his Consciously Competent way of grinding out his excellent results. He plans well in advance, maybe every shot of the round before he starts, so that he can practice what he expects to need as he warms up. He’ll line up every putt with his characteristic diligence. He’ll look sullen. He’ll be taciturn, rarely talking. And he’ll be awesomely successful. Conscious Competence I think.

So my recommendation for you is to try Conscious Competence more often. It might also be a form of mindfulness where you pay precise attention to what you’re doing. You’ll feel more alive and engaged and maybe even succeed more often.
