Learning to Lead: Find Your Pain

I’m working with a couple of 20 something clients who are growing into leadership roles. They both need to increase their Trust Radius. We’re at the stage where they both have to practice letting go of the need to be responsible so that others can step up.

In one case this is learning to let go of the need to input and unequivocally follow their own leader who is responsible for direction.

In the other case the need is to let go so that peers and subordinates can participate collaboratively even though my client can do all the thinking and problem solving himself.

In both cases the pain is in ‘holding their tongues when their instincts are to jump in’. As they learn to suffer this pain their ability to lead others will improve. They will grow into becoming the kind of leaders who are able to solicit and get more input from others because they will be able to hold themselves back to do things only they can do.
