Leading versus Managing

When coaching executives we often have to guide them to sort out issues relating to their leadership role. Sometimes they need to be a Queen or King kind of Leader. Other times they need to be a Prince or Princess type of Manager. In short an executive can can really stifle momentum if they are trying to lead when they should be managing and vice-versa. Here’s the difference.

The aim of managing is predictable, orderly results via tasks like organizing, staffing, establishing and monitoring control systems, planning, budgeting and solving problems.

Leading on the other hand has a grander horizon. It’s aim is positive change by setting direction, aligning people to a vision, motivating and coaching.

In short managing is getting the right things done while leading is getting the right people engaged and coached to do the right things.

An even shorter thought: coaching is the essential difference between leading and managing.
