Focus on What’s Hardest to See The Challenges

Lao-Tse the Chinese philosopher said “What’s in the way is the way”. I learned about this idea when I saw Dr. Peter Jensen talking about his terrific new book Igniting the Third Factor.
When you’re chasing an objective you’ll move forwards as you discover and overcome challenges you face. Some challenges will be hard to see and yet will be among the most important to overcome. These are the ones you must find in order to progress best. As coaches, one of our jobs is to help our clients identify and overcome these challenges. If you don’t have a coach a friend or colleague can substitute.
Here’s an example. Say you’re ambitious for a promotion to the next level at work. You have all the qualifications and you’ve been doing good work. But you haven’t been promoted yet and you don’t really know why. The reason you don’t know why is that you haven’t asked the right person. Until you have that discussion there’s a critical barrier between you and what you want that must be overcome.
