Are You Addicted to What You Should be Focused On?
I’ve learned in the past few years that we get addicted to things that provide random rewards. For example with golf and learning a musical instrument you don’t know what’s going to happen each time you try because there are so many variables. Randomly you’re successful and get addicted. It’s similar with gambling and young children. You make a bet or give a hug and randomly you get a winning response and so get addicted.
For most people who work, especially those who are self-employed, there are some actions that are most important to do first, regularly and well. Doing more of this ‘right stuff’ helps one reach their vision of success sooner. It is what they should be focused on and, I believe, addicted to.
For example I coach professionals on marketing themselves. The ‘right stuff’ on the road to self-marketing success is starting and cultivating relationships with potential clients and referral sources. And it’s possible to get addicted to this starting and cultivating because the rewards are random; i.e. you take a prospect to lunch and are either successful or not because the outcome depends on many factors. Once a self-marketer has been rewarded a few times they are on the road to addiction and focus on the ‘right stuff’.
Now can you figure out what you oughta be addicted to, to be focused on the ‘right stuff’?
